Which nutrients relate to normal vision?

·
Thai Notification No. 447 recognises that vitamin A, zinc and riboflavin contribute to the maintenance of normal vision.

When nutrients and eyes come up, the names people think of and the names with recognised wording are not the same set.

Which nutrients have recognised statements?

Under the annex to Thai Ministry of Public Health Notification No. 447 (B.E. 2566), three do:

  • Vitamin A contributes to the maintenance of normal vision
  • Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal vision
  • Riboflavin contributes to the maintenance of normal vision

Where does vitamin A come from?

Liver, egg yolk, milk and dairy. From plants it comes as beta-carotene, in pumpkin, carrot, sweet potato, papaya and dark leafy greens.

Beta-carotene is a precursor of vitamin A.

Where do zinc and riboflavin come from?

Zinc: oysters, red meat, poultry, seafood, dried beans and pumpkin seeds.

Riboflavin: milk, eggs, liver, wholegrains and leafy greens.

Can you have too much vitamin A?

Yes. Vitamin A is fat-soluble and accumulates. The tolerable upper intake level for adults is 3,000 micrograms RAE a day from preformed retinol.

Where do these fit in a normal diet?

All three come from ordinary foods, so the practical step is variety across the week rather than targeting any one of them.

Dietary supplements are not intended to prevent, treat or cure any disease.
